FOR INFO ABOUT GENERAL MEETINGS, EXECUTIVE MEETINGS, EVENTS, email Ben, call Paul, Dick, or leave a message at the headquarters number.
FOR INFO ON COMMITTEE MEETINGS, call or email committee chairs directly:
We sponsor dances and an annual Lizzard Ball (Green alternative to the elitist Blizzard Ball). We are active in local environmental actions and co-sponsor many progressive events.
We have elected new officers: Paul Fallon, chair; Dick Strubbe, vice-chair; David Sheehan, Treasurer; Randi Mail, Secretary; and have standing committees. For information on being involved with committees, call 881-3456, our officers, or contact the committee chairs directly by phone or email.
We finished working on a petition campaign to Save Our Libraries (saved 21 out of 21 local libraries - now we have to save them from neglect by the library system); working to extend Metrorail, both for anti-Sprawl and social justice reasons. We are also working on pesticide, brownfield, Great Lakes water, Peace Bridge, and other pollution issues, as well as organic food issues. Please REGISTER GREEN, and keep volunteering your time and money to continue our work
We saved the 21 endangered libraries for now, but they are still endangered. The BECPL director says that we must live up to "higher standards" of use or lose them anyway. The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Board meets on the third Thursday of every month at the Central Library, downtown Buffalo, Lafayette Square, 2nd floor Central meeting room, at 4 PM (Its up to the BECPL Board and Administration to keep the libraries open UNCONDITIONALLY AND IMPROVE THEM.) Join us in demanding better conditions in our libraries. (Some in the most economically challenged areas are only open 3 days per week, and have empty shelves which should be full of books.)
We are trying to get the Buffalo Common Council to establish a Buffalo Library Board for Buffalo's 15 libraries. They are the ONLY libraries out of 52 in the BECPL system without a board, an inequitable, undemocratic situation. Please contact your councilmember to support this.
ALSO, please call and/or write to BECPL board, your elected officials, the newspapers to call for improving the libraries that are still threatened by the proposed Strategic Plan. And let your neighborhood library know you support them. Make suggestions on how they can serve you better. Call 825-4174 for more info.
